No matter who you are, economics is integral to everything you do. The decisions one makes as a consumer, employee, and voter impact his or her life in multiple aspects, often in ways that are not obvious. The allocation of resources by companies, the government, and other people can alter your economic opportunities greatly, and thus it is essential to understand how the choices that not only you, but everyone and everything else makes, will alter your future. Doing so can can greatly enhance your economic opportunities, while not being aware, and making poor economic decisions, can greatly diminish your future economic well-being. In addition, even more workers are hired to make cars (at least for a time), thus creating even more jobs. In this way, your and everyone else s decision to consume cars has stimulated a portion of the economy. Perhaps this stimulation results in an opportunity for you to gain a better job, thus gaining you a higher wage, and raising your standard of living. This is entirely hypothetical, yet plausible, scenario of how your contribution to the economy as a consumer could enhance your economic opportunities. Your decision as a consumer can do more than stimulate the growth of a business; it can contribute to the decline of one as well. For example, perhaps you decide that you no longer wish to eat meat, and decide to go vegetarian. This may seem like a relatively personal, and inconsequential decision, yet it is actually very influential. If a large number of people decided to become vegetarian, the meat industry would take a direct hit: obviously, there would be less meat demanded, and profits would decrease. Furthermore, as less people demanded meat, the price would go down, as less people purchase d meat and it became harder to sell. Another effect this newfound vegetarianism would have is due to cross-price elasticity of meat and vegetables. As the demand of meats goes down, the price of vegetables and grains would likely go up, as more are demanded.

Othello and Desdemona Emotional Strangers

In William Shakespeare’s play Othello, the main character is a man named Othello. He is a Moor, a man with dark skin, who has earned his way to the rank of commanding general in Venice. It is one of the things that Shakespeare is praised for that these two characters are able to demonstrate such strong emotion. Their love for each other is seen in their unwavering devotion in this first test of their relationship as they face down the town. However, even this intense emotion, perhaps especially this sort of intense emotion, can easily work against itself. This is demonstrated throughout the play as Iago carefully manipulates Othello’s perceptions, playing off of his insecurities and enflaming his jealousies to the point of violence. Unaware of what is happening, Desdemona continues to show her fierce devotion to her husband which both blinds her to the truth of Othello’s murderous emotions and feeds them. In the end, both Desdemona and Othello are blinded by their emotions, preventing them from seeing reality which leads to their deaths. Even before Desdemona appears in the play, it is clear to the audience that she loves Othello beyond all reason. Although much of this idea is perhaps lost on a modern audience, Shakespeare’s audience would have been shocked at the idea that a young girl of good breeding would think to marry someone without her father’s approval or knowl edge and that she would marry a man of a different race at a time when that was rare. She is not a bad girl, though, as she shows her father sincere devotion as soon as she comes on stage. She tells him, â€Å"To you I am bound for life and education; / My life and education both do learn me / How to respect you: you are the lord of duty; / I am hitherto your daughter† (I, iii, 182-85). In these lines, she recognizes the care and devotion he’s given her, acknowledges the gifts he’s bestowed upon her and admits that up to this point, she belonged entirely to him. However, she then says that her duty has been transferred to Othello, who she has taken as her husband. If it is thought that perhaps race didn’t mean anything to the people back then, Desdemona’s father’s reaction to her marriage removes any doubt. This is something Desdemona apparently doesn’t feel is important even though it will limit her social circle. Instead, she agonizes trying to figure out what she might have done to upset him. She never thinks perhaps he is acting unjustly, irrationally or improperly nor does she think that her promises to Cassio might have a role in Othello’s strange behavior. Because her love for Othello is so strong, it doesn’t occur to her to consider he might suspect her intentions regarding Cassio. Knowing him to be a just man and a capable leader, she cannot believe he would think such things of her or of his once-favorite. This strong emotion for him coupled with her puzzlement over his recent behavior makes it impossible for her to realize the dangerous state of Othello’s emoti ons or their nature. However, even in the final moments before she dies, Desdemona continues to express love for her husband and satisfaction at her choice for marriage. Unlike Desdemona, who seems to have a pure and innocent nature, Othello allows jealousy and suspicion to rule him throughout most of the play despite his own innate innocence. In the opening scene, Othello shows why he was able to achieve his high rank even though he was a stranger to the Venice society. He is a strong adherent to the military code of honor. This code of honor meant strong adherence to a specific set of expected behaviors which included honorable combat among matched foes, adherence to home society laws, fundamental trust of fellow soldiers and an action-oriented approach to life. In defending Desdemona and his marriage, Othello shows his appreciation for this code in his willingness to argue and defend his position while refusing to take up arms against a man vastly inferior in fighting ability and family by marriage. The higher a person’s rank, the more he is expected to honor the code and, as seems the case with Othello, the harder it is for him to conceive of someone else breaking it. Whereas Desdemona starts the play arguing for their love, Othello receives the first blow to his faith in his wife. This blow comes from her father as he expresses his own fit of rage. He warns Othello, â€Å"Look to her, Moor, if thou hast eyes to see: / She has deceived her father, and may thee† (I, iii, 292-93). Iago exploits Othello’s soldier’s code after hearing the father’s word as he talks about Othello’s â€Å"free and open nature / That thinks men honest that but seem to be so; / And will as tenderly be led by th’ nose / As asses are† (I, iii, 393-96). Thus, Iago uses this moment of doubt and suspicion and his own knowledge of Othello’s inner beliefs and insecurities as a means of poisoning the newlyweds. Rather than unde rstanding Desdemona’s attempts to reunite him to his friend for what they were, Othello hears the ideas that Iago has put in his head about a possible relationship between Desdemona and Cassio. Not until his rage is worked out in action does Othello calm down enough to start thinking again. As he learns of her true innocence and his own foolishness, he understands that he cannot live with the tremendous guilt at having killed his love and he runs himself through with his sword. Both Desdemona and Othello are too blinded by their emotions to be able to see truth. Desdemona tries to demonstrate through her words and actions that she loves Othello and only Othello, but she is unable to see that her attempts at reassurance are only making the misunderstanding deeper. Othello, because of the way in which Iago has painted the scene, is only capable of seeing the ugliness that Iago has suggested. He accepts it because he has survived by listening to his men before anyone and believing Iago has the same fierce loyalty to his captain that Othello feels for his superior. This post lists and defines these terms. The verb please, meaning â€Å"be agreeable,† is from plaisir, the Old French intermediary of placere, which is also the origin of pleasure, meaning â€Å"give pleasure to† and, as a noun, â€Å"enjoyment† or â€Å"something enjoyed.† (The synonym pleasance is rare.) Please, as an adverb, also precedes or follows a request (â€Å"Please close the door†) or an affirmation (â€Å"Yes, please†) to make it more courteous but can also express derision (â€Å"Oh, please†). The antonyms of the verb and noun, respectively, are displease and displeasure. Something that pleases is pleasing, and someone who pleases is a pleaser. Placebo was adopted directly from a Latin term meaning â€Å"I will please.† The word refers to a substance given to a patient for mental rather than physical relief (because the patient is deceived into thinking that the placebo will have an effect on an imagined or exaggerated condition). It also applies to a similarly innocuous substance given to members of a control group in an experiment to help evaluate the effectiveness of a drug taken by test subjects; if the drug is determined to be more effective than the placebo, it is efficacious. Another close relative is the adjective pleasant, meaning â€Å"agreeable,† the antonym of which is unpleasant. A pleasantry is a polite remark made during a social occasion, or a humorous or playful one. Meanwhile, plea is also descended from placere, by way of placitum, meaning â€Å"decree† or â€Å"opinion†; the evolution of the sense is from â€Å"something agreed on because it pleases† to â€Å"something decided.† The verb form, plead, originally applied exclusively to making a plea in court but was later extended to apply to an urgent request; pleading developed as a noun from the first sense, describing the act of arguing a case. Complacence originally meant â€Å"pleasure† but came to pertain to a lack of concern or to self-satisfaction; the variation complacency has the negative connotation of clueless complacence. The homophone complaisance is a direct borrowing from Middle French meaning â€Å"desire to please.† The adjectival forms are complacent and complaisant. Placid, from placere by way of placidus, meaning â€Å"peaceful,† retains the Latin meaning. (The noun form is placidity.) The Latin verb placare, meaning â€Å"appease† or â€Å"assuage,† is related; it is the source of placate, which retains those meanings. The adjectival form is placatory, and the act is called placation. Placable is an alternative adjective, though it is rare; the antonym, implacable, is more common. Rubrics - How to Make Grading Easier Rubrics can be defined as a simplified way to grade a complicated assignment. For example, when you are grading an essay, how do you decide whether it gets an A or a B? What about if you are assigning number grades to the essay? Whats the difference between a 94 and a 96? The times that I have graded without a rubric, I have typically relied on the subjective method of reading and ranking. I read each essay and rank them in order from best to worst. Usually when Im knee deep in essays, I begin to wonder why I did this to myself. The easy answer, of course, is that it seems much easier to avoid the extra work required to create a rubric. However, the time saved up front is more than lost while grading. Here are three reasons why I find rubrics truly effective. First, rubrics save time because I can simply look at your rubric and mark off points. Second, rubrics keep me honest, even when Ive had a horrible day and my cat wont leave me alone. I feel much more objective as I sit before my mountain of papers. More important than these two reasons, however, is that when I have created a rubric beforehand and shown it to my students I get better quality work. They know what I want. In the initial stages of evolution the work of a man was supposed to be hunting and protecting the family, while females were supposed to be their family nurturers and caretakers. As time passed by, there was formation of society, and new occupations started emerging, giving the people jobs without the bias of their gender. But with every developing phase there are its cons, that are inevitable, and unemployment is of the biggest problems of not only poor nations, but also developing and developed nations. Unemployment is such a phase in a person’s life, which makes him think that he is vulnerable, and gives him a feeling of being subdued by the pressure of the society. In today’s world were money is supposed to be the only prime objective in a person’s life, and when someone is unemployed, he has to face the brunt of being incapable of financially stabilizing himself, which leads to social and psychological problems, which ultimately gives a clear message of the help that is required by these individuals. In the world of booming population and migrant supposition, individuals are left with huge amount of pressure to acquire a job, and when that individual fails to do so, he is left with very disturbing thoughts which ultimately lead to crime, suicide, depression, humiliation and feeling of internal failure. Unemployment itself is a very large word and is diversified into sub categories, the very first category is known as the cyclical unemployment, which exists due to the lack of demand of labor, second category is of technological unemployment, where newer technologies reduce the hands of labor that work in an organization. The third category is of Classical wage conflict, when unemployment occurs due to the divergence arising in the minimum wage criteria. The fourth kind is known as structural unemployment, which is caused to due geographical disparity. Then there is common fresher unemployment, where individuals have to face unemployment looking for their first jobs after finishing their courses. The sixth kind of category is related with the seasonal occupation, where individuals are only employed during the season. One of the worst categories is the uneducated and unskilled unemployment category, where the individual has to go through a lot, as he/she does not know even where to start from. Unemployment if it has to be put on papers then it is an social issue, an unemployed and frustrated youth is more dangerous than organized criminal, as the mentality of a depressed unemployed person is to grab any opportunity he can and would very easily forget the thin line between right and wrong, and the same is best expressed by Macarov below: â€Å" In the United States, unemployment and pockets of unemployment are often seen as problems not only in themselves but as indicators of a high incidence of related problems† Any problem that has got to do with social issues, social workers step in to help resolve and pacify the problem. Unemployment is one of America’s greatest crux problem, and unemployment apart from being a social problem, automatically also becomes a social workers problem too, as it has a massive negative impact on the society. An unemployed person be it a labor or a graduate, has to go through an ordeal, as most of them are likely to have financial responsibilities behind them and it is because of this burden, they are likely to commit felonies or suicides, or anything that would ultimately lead to destruction of either of their own lives or public’s lives and properties. This becomes harder for a social worker, as he does not know up to what level or what decree an unemployed youth with huge amount of depression and frustration is capable of. Unemployment initially is a personal problem, but with due time, i. e. the patience level of an unemployed person when it ceases to exist, it can lead to a psychological problem. When the unemployed person starts losing hope in having hoped to get a job, he can get into depression and that ultimately can lead to psychological problems. The initial problems of an unemployed youth are falling behind peers, and watching the burden of responsibility increase on them, but after a while it take its toll on them leading to complex psychological problems. According to the latest OCED report, America had an average of 4. 6% as unemployment rate in the year 2007, which though was better than the average 6, it can be understood, that country of such a huge size with comparably lesser population in terms of India and China, has an unemployment rate lesser than that of Taiwan and Norway. This just shows the amount of social work that would be required to help people and give them a lending hand in their problems. What actually social work can do is firstly sort the category of unemployed people and give them support and can raise unemployment issues with the local authorities to help secure those jobs along with silently pacifying them with sessions of control and hope and education them on lines on unemployment insurances and other government policies and bringing in welfare programs like the way it was bought during the ‘Great Depression’ . However social work cannot give them a job, they can only raise the issue, also counseling done by them will be only for the people who are willing to take support and are ready to accept help, but social work would not be able to target those individuals who have crossed the limits of depression and have already thought of harming themselves or the society. â€Å"An empty mind is a devil’s workshop†, this quote goes well with the millions of unemployed people, and if not given proper guidance by social groups or if then don’t get jobs in time, then it is more like a time bomb that is ticking much fast, and will someday, swallow the whole nation because of frustration and depression by them. The only case where citing is unnecessary is when the fact is common knowledge that can be found in a variety of places and most people know about it. Students who plagiarize from the internet, donÏ€t even consider it really plagiarizing. They feel that since it is not a hard copy of the work that it really isnÏ€t wrong. This goes back to the idea that students today arenÏ€t even sure what to consider plagiarism. With the creation of the World Wide Web, students have the ability to access great amounts of information at a faster speed. Years ago, in order to plagiarize students had to spend hours searching through books to copy information from to write a paper. The internet today contains information on so many topics, that is almost impossible to not find what you are looking for. There are even websites that specialize in providing students with papers. The task of plagiarizing from the internet has become so popular that according to a survey found in Education Week, ≠¥54% of students admitted to plagiarizing from the internet≠¤ (≠¥Statistics≠¤ 1). The commonness of plagiarizing has grown so much from past decades that is becoming hard to control. Although, plagiarism has become so easily accomplished, the same can not be said for catching plagiarists. There is just too much information of the World Wide Web, that it makes it almost impossible for plagiarists to be caught in the act.

Broken April Essay

Broken April was written by Ismail Kadare, the novel takes place in the mountainous regions of Albania during the 1920’s. The Kanun is an ancient set of rules that controls the daily lives of the people in the mountains. Such as Gjorg a 26 year old mountaineer, who is pressured by his family to seek vengeance for the death of his older brother. A newspaper writer Bessian and his wife Diana Vorpsi are from the city who are very intimate newlyweds having their honeymoon in the mountains. Kadare uses the lack or there of physical proximity to imply the strong detaching power of human relationships made by the Kanun. As illustrated by Bessian’s obsession of the Kanun causing a rejection of Diana, which is later mirrored when she develops her own obsession with it making that Bessian develops a fear of the Kanun. When Diana and Bessian were first introduced, Kadare displays a more intimate connection between them but, Bessian’s thought of the blood code is making their relationship lurking into separation. While Bessian and Diana were riding in the carriage, Bessian, â€Å"holding his wife’s hand† and at the same time â€Å"moved his head† (61) towards the window of the carriage while watching the mountains. His â€Å"holding† signifies Bessian’s dominating control of their relationship shown by the inequality of their grip. Bessian is illustrated as a dominating character because society and the blood code make it that women are inferior, by implying that Diana’s voice is worthless to Bessian. The method is also exemplified by â€Å"his wife†, which alludes to her unknown identity therefore making her seem like and unimportant character. The physical proximity still exists as a warm and tender relationship between Diana and Bessian but, Bessian’s unconscious interest in the Kanun is destroying on his focus of Diana, during their honeymoon. Diana and Bessian were approaching the tower to stay the night, and they get into an argument and Bessian â€Å"shook his dead for a moment† (84) suggesting a disapproval of Diana’s immature behavior by her smiling and their connection in the relationship. The words â€Å"moment† and â€Å"flicker† describing Diana’s quick and lively personality foreshadows Bessian developing a greater aggression towards Diana because of the blood code. Meanwhile, â€Å"match† symbolizes a destructive spark causing a powerful evil fire, foreshadowing a huge physical disconnection between them. The foreshadowing of their relationship and Bessian’s dominance leads to Diana’s opinions slowly supporting the Kanun more. After their introduction, Diana and Bessian decide to go to the tower of Orosh. During their journey and stay, Diana begins to steadily detach from Bessian and begins to become a slave to the Kanun’s seductiveness. As Diana and Bessian were planning to go to Wolf’s Pass, they were discussing about the boundary marking’s ceremony at Wolf’s Pass while inside the carriage. Diana put her head â€Å"right† (98), against the window. The physical action of her head â€Å"right† against the window suggests that she is trying to escape the discussion of the Kanun and the honeymoon because she is trying to resist the negative energy of the Kanun. Also the other meaning of the word right, signifying correctness, suggests how she is attempting to go the correct way, from the inside her of heart, away from the blood code. Additionally during the discussion Diana exclaimed, â€Å"How many opportunities to die! † when speaking to Bessian indirectly but directly to the window. The action of speaking to the window reveals a rising tension of Diana being able to express her feelings to Bessian, eventually making her feel worthless. Diana’s opinion of, â€Å"how many ways to die†, is used to compare Diana’s pale, cold, piercing opinion, compared to Bessian’s warm, passionate, intrigue of the Kanun alludes to the vast differences of their ideas and that Diana is developing a slight amusement to death. While Diana and Bessian were talking to Ali Binak, Bessian looked at his wife questioningly, as if he was saying to her, â€Å"What has come over you? (101), Bessian is starting to fear the Kanun because it is taking over Diana’s jovial sprit and replaced with a weak aggressive one. Additionally he is feeling insecure because he is not capable of giving her protection and security of a husband, therefore causing him to fear the Kanun and society it. Bessian said he saw, a â€Å"fleeting† light in her eyes. The light symbolizes purity and by it â€Å"fleeting† from her eyes shows that Bessian doesn’t know Diana’s true emotions anymore as he did before by looking into her eyes. With their opinions bringing tension between them, Diana eventually becomes engulfed in the Kanun but still seeks an escape leading to the regrets of Bessian bringing Diana on the trip. Around the end of the book in chapter six and seven, Bessian has developed a fear of the Kanun because it has generated a dark-empty look in Diana’s eyes. His fear was later developed into a feeling of remorse that Diana has become under the Kanun’s power. Diana and Bessian were in the carriage right after she saw Gjorg for the first time. Bessian â€Å"moved his head and kissed her timidly† (169), â€Å"Moved† throughout the book signifies a distant separation but Bessian is attempting to closely mend their relationship, by â€Å"kissing† her to show the affection he didn’t before. But he is â€Å"timid† because he is afraid of her new character from the Kanun and is questioning the existence of old Diana coming back. After Bessian attempts kissing Diana, Bessian fell asleep while Diana has her back turned to him as Kadare describes her action as, â€Å"timid, as if her back was towards a stranger† (181). With her back turned towards Bessian and her face towards the fire exemplifies that Diana is moving more towards a strong destructive as symbolized by the fire, the Kanun. The word â€Å"stranger† shows that Bessian is no longer important to Diana and that the roles of dominance have switched. Diana and Bessian were walking in Upper White Water they were having an intimate moment until they started talking about the tower of refuge, Diana â€Å"turned her head towards the kulla† (186). Diana’s action of turning her head exemplifies submission to the Kanun and her love for Gjorg. Meanwhile she is completely indifferent to Bessian and making an unconscious plan of going into the tower. When they were traveling back home to the city Bessian became regretful of bringing Diana and thought, â€Å"What the devil was I thinking? † (207), the question shows a majority of Bessian’s attitude towards the Kanun. Depending on how the question is read his emotions can be viewed as regret, sorrow, anger, fear, or hopelessness of completely losing Diana to the mountains. â€Å"Devil† is used as a symbol of evil perhaps referring to the evil separating power of the Kanun. In conclusion, Kadare uses physical proximity to emphasize the destructive power of human relationships made by the Kanun. In the beginning Bessian was in power because the man is seen that way in society and in the Kanun, but his obsession foreshadows Diana and Bessian’s separation. Second, Diana is trying to escape the power of the Kanun but is later completely submerged in its power. Lastly, the trip to the mountains was eventually regretted because the Kanun completely changed their intimate relationship because Diana and Bessian because it they were outsiders going into an unknown power.

Executive Summary 1.1 Synopsis of the Situation The history of Angostura aromatic bitters approaches the year of 1822, when a cholera epidemic whipped the population of Angostura in Venezuela, when the young doctor Johann Gottlieb Benjamin Siegert created a somewhat bitter medicine, quite unusual taste, but of proven volatilities effectively relieve the stomach of his many patients. These national essences bitter have an alcohol content of 3 degrees, which makes you need to use a larger amount of product per cocktail or preparation, unlike drops Angostura aromatic bitters which have an alcohol content of 44.7 degrees making them stronger and with 2 or 3 drops per cocktail is enough to make the mixture,  not only because of its alcohol content but the strong flavor of the merged its ingredients. The category of biters brings sustainable growth in the global market of 4.7% in the last 5 years (Source: International Wine & Spirit Research). Angostura is still the leader in this category of bitter. 1.2 Key aspects of the marketing plan We want to be the exclusive distributor of Angostura aromatic bitters in Colombia. For this reason, we have to import the product, market and build brand image of â€Å"Drops of Angostura aromatic bitters† in the country. Also, position the product as a reference category. The key factors of this marketing plan are: Comply with the requirements of law, such as trademark registration and authorization. The trademark registration protects the producer (trademark owner) against any misuse of it by a third; this register is valid for 10 years. The health record is the guarantee that emits a government institution, which certifies that a product is fit for human consumption. Segment drops Angostura aromatic bitters into two distribution channels, which would be the ON-PREMISE (hotels, restaurants, coffee shops and bars) and OFF-PREMISE big retail channel. Define the cities in which the product and the strategic trade partners (sub-distributors) through which will be sell. The decision of destroying any living being should be left in the hands of the being, and in this case that is impossible. We have to wait until the child is old enough to ask her. Many couples, who can not have children of their own, want to adopt new born babies. If the embryo is allowed to live nothing but good will happen for it, because of the demand for newborn babies in the adoption market. The child would not end up in a foster home because the mother has feelings for it, and would see the baby is well taken care of. Adoptive parents are known to be loving and caring begetters, because they try hard to bring children into their lives. Consequently, the judge should at least allow another couple to make good use of the embryos. The lady in the fact pattern still has the desire for children. She gave her eggs fully expecting to use them when the time is right. The husband obviously wants nothing to do with the embryos, but the wife could make an agreement to take full responsibility. Therefore, relieving the husband of all liabilities, and placing them on the wife. She may also see these embryos as her last opportunity to have children.
